Gas and electric dryers
Gas and electric dryers repaired in your home, with a vent check on every heating call. The service call and diagnosis are free when you go ahead with the repair.
Here are the four dryer problems we see most often, the parts behind them and a quick check you can do yourself.
A drum that turns but stays cold usually has one failed part in the heat circuit.
Electric dryers heat with a coil that can break, often after months of running with poor airflow.
On gas dryers the igniter glows but the flame never lights, or the valve coils stop opening the gas.
This safety fuse opens when the dryer overheats. It protects the house, and it usually points to a vent problem.
Quick checkOn an electric dryer, check that both halves of the double breaker are on. One tripped side lets the drum turn with no heat.
If a normal load needs two cycles, the dryer is losing airflow or heat.
Lint collects in the duct and the outside hood. Long vent runs to a roof or side wall clog faster than short ones.
This part switches the heat on and off. When it sticks, the dryer runs too cool and takes far longer.
A cracked or loose blower wheel moves less air through the drum, even with a clean vent.
Quick checkClean the lint screen, then run the dryer and feel for strong airflow at the outside vent hood.
A few dryer parts wear out and get loud, and each one sounds a little different.
Rollers at the back hold up the drum. Flat spots give a steady thump with every turn.
The pulley keeps the belt tight. A dry bearing squeals, loudest in the first few minutes.
Plastic glides at the front wear through, and the drum scrapes on metal with a grinding sound.
Quick checkRun the dryer empty for a minute. If the noise is still there, it's mechanical and worth fixing before the drum shaft wears.
A dryer that hums, clicks or does nothing usually has a broken link between the motor and the drum.
If the motor runs but the drum doesn't turn, the belt has often snapped.
The dryer won't start if the switch doesn't sense a closed door.
A motor that hums without turning, or trips the breaker, may need to be replaced.
Quick checkClose the door firmly, check the breaker, then listen for a hum when you press start. A hum with no movement is useful to mention when you call.
