Built-in and portable dishwashers
We fix dishwashers that won't drain, leak, start or clean, with certified and insured technicians. The service call and diagnosis are free when you go ahead with the repair.
Four problems account for most dishwasher calls. Here is what causes them and what you can safely try first.
A little water in the sump is normal. An inch or more after the cycle is not.
The filter under the lower spray arm traps food and glass. Plenty of people don't know it twists out for cleaning.
A pump that hums without moving water, or makes no sound, is worn or jammed.
The drain hose can clog where it joins the garbage disposal. A new disposal with the knockout plug still in place blocks it completely.
Quick checkTwist out the filter and rinse it, and run the garbage disposal for a few seconds before you start the dishwasher.
Even a slow leak under a dishwasher can ruin a floor or cabinet base, so it's worth finding early.
The rubber seal around the door hardens and shrinks, and water seeps out at the lower corners.
The valve under the front panel can crack or stick, letting water drip even when the dishwasher is off.
Water under the middle of the machine often comes from the seal on the wash pump.
Quick checkUse dishwasher detergent only, since dish soap makes foam that pushes past the door, then note where the water first appears.
When the dishwasher runs but dishes come out gritty or cloudy, water isn't reaching them with enough force or heat.
Hard water scale and food bits block the small holes in the spray arms, so some dishes get almost no water.
A worn pump moves less water, and the top rack suffers first.
Without enough heat, grease stays on the dishes and they come out wet and cloudy.
Quick checkTake off the spray arms and clear the holes with a toothpick, then run hot water at the sink before you start a cycle.
If the lights come on but nothing fills, or the panel stays dark, the problem is usually in the start circuit.
The dishwasher needs to know the door is latched before it fills. A worn latch switch blocks the start.
This fuse cuts power after an overheat, and the panel goes completely dark.
Buttons that don't respond, or a panel that lights up but won't run a cycle, can mean the board.
Quick checkCheck the breaker and the switch under the sink if your dishwasher has one, and make sure the control lock isn't on.
